Chaja is a philosophy student in 1970's Antwerp. 
She takes a job as a nanny with the orthodox Jewish Kalman Family.
Although she is Jewish herself, her liberal attitude clashes with the rules and traditions of the family. Through her foundness for the retarded 4 year old boy Simcha and the open mind of his mother, she starts to learn from her experiences. Although the cultural gap remains, her time with the family gives her new perspectives on her Jewish background and her relationship with her parents. But then, just as her love for Simcha was strongest, the boy drowns under circumstances that indirectly put blame on her...
